Terms of Use

In English
opencopy.org is an online library of contemporary literary works. In very much the same way that you can borrow hard copies of literary works from your local public library, you are allowed to ‘borrow’, for personal use only, the ‘open copy’ of any work posted on this site. At all times, however, you must respect the authors’ rights and the terms under which their work is provided to you.
To understand the need to respect author’s rights, there is a dimension of Internet publishing that needs to be underscored here. Commercial value is based on withholding access to a certain work to only qualified persons - those with the ability and willingness to pay. Therefore, any creative work situated for broad public access (such as posting on the Internet) may become, by virtue of this broad access, commercially unfeasible. Additionally, the digital nature of the Internet makes it that much easier to pirate and abuse content posted publicly.
Authors publishing their works online are made aware of these risks prior to publication. However, they have taken the risk of forgoing some or all of the personal monetary gains their work could have otherwise earned them for the benefit of the reading public. That is all the more reason to celebrate, respect and protect their rights for the benefit of society as a whole!
